De'Andre Blockmon Memorial Scholarship
On August 24, 2024, De'Andre Blockmon, a graduating CSUB senior, tragically passed away in his sleep just before the start of the fall semester. De'Andre was a Guardian Scholar and worked as a student assistant for the program. He overcame many challenges, including homelessness, during his time at CSUB. Watch this special video that celebrates De'Andre's life.
Because De'Andre was not a foster youth, he was not eligible for the special funds that foster youth receive, even though he faced similar struggles. To honor his memory, the De'Andre Blockmon Memorial Scholarship Fund was created. This fund will provide support to CSUB Guardian Scholar students who do not have a stable home or live in the custody of a parent or guardian.
Guardian Scholars Foster Youth Program
The Guardian Scholars Foster Youth Program provides safe, stable housing for current and former foster youth, as well as homeless students, who lack family support or a place to live. The program offers housing, meals, support, and helps students develop independent living skills. This stability allows students to succeed at rates equal to or higher than the general student body. Without this program, many foster and homeless youth would not be able to attend CSUB.
